How to Discourage Search Engines

In this guide, we will be going over how to keep Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc., from indexing your website.

There could be various reasons why you wouldn’t want the search engines from indexing your site, but the most common reason is for newly created websites. A lot of webmasters don’t want Google to index, “Coming soon – check back soon.”

If your site is already established, I highly recommend you NOT discourage search engines from indexing your website. Google and others are smart enough to know your site is under construction and will check multiple times a day to see if you’ve reopened your doors.

Step #1:

First, we must log into our administrative panel (example.com/wp-admin). Once you reach that screen, on the left-hand side, click Settings.

Step #2:

Next click into Reading.

Step #3

Find “search engine visibility.”
Checkmark “discourage search engines from indexing this site.”

As a word of caution, the search engines do not need to honor this request, but in my past experiences, they do.
